Birkbeck is a research-intensive university, and we offer a range of competitively awarded PhD studentships funded by support from UK Research and Innovation, charities, government and external partners. The studentships are based across social and biological science departments in 3 centres of excellence in biosocial research: UCL, University of Manchester and University of Essex. The studentships are for 4 years with the first year spent in project rotations and biosocial training before selecting a PhD research topic for years 2-4.
Studentships. We support around 1,900 PhD students at any one time. Funding for both PhD and Masters studentships is provided to research organisations, such as universities and MRC units, institutes and centres, who select outstanding candidates for projects with leading researchers.We do not fund students directly, so prospective students should contact the institution at which they wish to.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded London Interdisciplinary Social Science (LISS) (provided by QMUL, in conjunction with King’s College London (KCL) and Imperial College) Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) is offering a range of studentships for the next academic year (2020-21) and applicants to the School of Law PhD programme are eligible to apply for these awards.
